Arrests net several stolen weapons

Three suspects are in custody and several stolen firearms have been taken off the street shortly after a home in Rincon was burglarized Monday.

Deputies observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Mill Pond Road driving in a reckless manner late Monday afternoon. As the deputy turned around on the suspect vehicle, all three occupants fled on foot. Deputies and investigators apprehended all three suspects a short time later. Effingham County investigators worked with Rincon officers in apprehending the burglary suspects.

Some of the weapons were found in the suspects’ vehicle. Two additional stolen weapons were located in one of the suspect’s residence following a search warrant.

The driver, 20-year-old Stephen Joshua Smith of Rincon, was charged with reckless driving, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, theft by receiving, and is facing burglary charges in Rincon.

Shandon Kile Purdy, 17, of Rincon, was charged with theft by receiving, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and burglary.

Purdy and Smith are being held in the Effingham County Jail.

A 16-year-old juvenile was charged with burglary, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and theft by receiving. He is being held in the Claxton Youth Detention Center.

Two men were arrested Tuesday in Eden after a domestic dispute led to a standoff. Deputies say George Driggers, 47, threatened his girlfriend and law enforcement with a gun, then barricaded himself inside a home. His father, Alford Driggers, 80, was also charged for allegedly threatening deputies.
