A registered sex offender was arrested by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office on child molestation charges Thursday.

Robert Hart, 28, of Meldrim was charged with aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy and first-degree cruelty to children.

"There was more than enough evidence indicating he had been molesting a 4-year-old girl," said ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Hart is being held in the Effingham County Jail without bond.

Hart was arrested by ECSO investigators Thursday at his Withlacoochie Avenue home. They had interviewed Hart as part of their investigation into an accusation that he molested the 4-year-old daughter of an acquaintance.

"We arrived on the scene and he said, ‘I know you’re here to arrest me for child molestation,’" Ehsanipoor said.

Hart was on probation for a 2006 child molestation conviction in Bulloch County.
