The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam where people are being contacted via text message on their cellular phones.

Since Wednesday, the ECSO has received several reports from citizens that they are receiving a text message on their cell phone telling them that their bank account has been compromised. The message asks the victim to call a number where they receive an automated message asking them to enter their account information.

ECSO deputies advise that if you receive such a message, do not call the number and provide your personal information. If you believe your account has been hacked or compromised, contact your bank directly.
