Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two suspects in an auto theft after they led law enforcement officers on a pursuit Tuesday afternoon.

A Guyton police officer spotted the vehicle, reported to be stolen out of South Carolina. The vehicle’s occupants, Kevin Shuman, 40, of Springfield, and Sandra Heath, 30, of Guyton, led officers on a chase through Effingham County.

The vehicle was recovered after both suspects fled on foot in a wooded area behind the 1000 block of Sandhill Road.

Heath and Shuman were found by sheriff’s deputies, along with a Savannah-Chatham Metro Police canine, inside an abandoned truck nearby following a search.

Both are facing several charges, including theft by receiving stolen property, bringing stolen property across state lines and several other traffic related charges. Effingham County investigators have been in contact with South Carolina authorities.

Shuman also has several active warrants out of Effingham County, including felony criminal damage to property, battery and simple battery. Additional charges could be forthcoming.

Both are being held in the Effingham County Jail.
