Rincon man arrested in February Guyton rape

Guyton police have arrested a man in connection with a February rape.

James Lee of Rincon has been charged with rape and aggravated sodomy after his arrest two weeks ago. Lee had been a person of interest in the incident from the start, according to Guyton Police Chief Randy Alexander, and the arrest was made after the evidence came back from the Georgia State Crime Lab in Decatur.

“It took four months to get the evidence back,” Alexander said, noting that a backlog of cases and a shortage of manpower at the state crime lab were factors in the delay. “During the course of the investigation, we wanted to make sure we had enough evidence. We got the warrant and put him under arrest.”

After establishing Lee as a suspect and getting enough evidence for a search warrant, Guyton Police was able to get DNA evidence from Lee to send to the state crime lab.

“We sent that in and waited for the results to come back,” Alexander said.

Lee was taken to the Effingham County Jail.
