Effingham County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a teenager on a false robbery report, after the teen said he was held up Sundaynight.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday, ECSO deputies responded to Highway 119 North address on the report of an armed robbery. Danny Newsom, 19, of Clyo told deputies he was robbed at gunpoint by three individuals after his vehicle broke down on the side of the road. Newsom told deputies that two bags of money containing more than $3,000 were taken during the robbery. The money belonged to a convenience store where Newsom was employed.

As deputies investigated the story, they discovered several holes in Newsom's story. They eventually discovered that Newsom staged the crime scene and gave the bank bags containing the money to another individual prior to calling 911.

Newsom was arrested and charged with false report of a crime, false statements and theft by taking.

"When people call 911 and report a crime that is in fact a false claim, our deputies waste valuable time and resources needlessly investigating details which are untrue," Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said, "therefore diverting their time away from a true crime."

Newsom was booked into the Effingham County Jail.
