An Alabama man who was the driver of a tractor-trailer involved in a fatal accident pled guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor second-degree vehicular homicide.

Donald Patrick of York, Ala., was booked into Effingham County Jail on Tuesday and entered his plea before State Court Judge Ronnie Thompson. He was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $1,320.

Witnesses said Patrick’s Peterbilt semi ran a stop sign at the intersection of Blue Jay and Midland roads around 8:30 a.m. on March 29, 2013. He hit a Toyota sedan being driven by Peggy Preveaux of Guyton. Preveaux, 49, was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Patrick appeared to be speeding and went through the stop sign, hitting Preveaux’s car as she was southbound on Midland Road. At the time, only traffic along Blue Jay Road was forced to stop at the intersection. Since then, stop signs have been installed on Midland Road, turning the crossing into a four-way stop.
