Daniel gives up Rincon seat

Citing health issues, Rincon City Council member Ann Daniel has resigned her seat.

Daniel was in her first term on the council, winning election to the post in 2007. Mayor Ken Lee and the rest of the council members accepted Daniel’s letter of resignation Monday night.

“This doesn’t happen a lot,” Mayor Lee said. “It’s kind of new territory. She’s been a valuable, valuable member of our council. We’re going to miss her.”

How the seat will be filled depends on how much time is left in the term. Had there been more than a year to go before the post came up for election, city council would call for a special election.

“With less than a year before election, it is up to the council to appoint a new member to fill the remainder of the term,” Lee explained.

Daniel moved to Rincon in 1999 and ran for city council in 2007. She garnered the most votes of any of the seven candidates. Daniel had expressed doubts about being able to serve on city council when her health issues first cropped up, Lee said.

“She initially was doing well and intended to continue,” he said. “But she’s had a setback. She is facing some challenges over the next few months.”

Rincon City Council members have 45 days to make an appointment to the seat.

“Hopefully by the next scheduled meeting, we’ll have an opportunity to consider our options and see who we might like to identify as a possible selection for that position,” Lee said. “We’ll present some nominations and vote on them together as a council.”
