SPRINGFIELD --  A door malfunction is believed to be the cause of an inmate escape from the Effingham County Jail on Monday.

Kevin David Lenix Wilson, 32, had access to an unsecured area where he made his escape at 8 p.m. Monday. A full investigation into the escape is being conducted.

Wilson was being held for the Rincon Police Department for numerous charges that occurred during a traffic stop and chase in October 2020. Last August, Wilson was indicted by a Chatham County grand jury for three counts of malice murder, one count of felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon that occurred May 13, 2020, in Savannah.
