Council members took the action at their Tuesday morning meeting. Jarriel had been the interim chief after longtime chief David Starling and assistant chief Mike Crager were let go in October.
Council members also approved the recommendations on Starling and Crager’s appeals, choosing to demote them, rather than terminate them. The action also includes a one-year suspension with the option to reapply at the discretion of the department, mayor and council.
Starling and Crager were put on administrative leave in conjunction with an investigation into the fire department. They ultimately were dismissed but appealed the decision.
