SPRINGFIELD -- On Tuesday, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to Effingham High School after a threating social media post was discovered.

The school was placed on a Level 2 lockdown out of an abundance of caution. Once the threat was deemed to be not credible, the lockdown was lifted and students were released.

Detectives are still attempting to determine the validity of the social media account that posted the threat, as well as the person behind it.

In a completely separate incident, after school was released, a fight broke out on a school bus and spilled out onto the roadway at 7th and Howard streets. Rincon  Police and ECSO deputies who were familiar with the students all responded to the scene.

Witnesses identified the students involved and also stated they heard gunshots. Authorities investigated the reported gunshots and discovered shell casings and a stolen gun behind a house on 7th Street. The weapon was never aimed at anyone and there were no injuries from the gunfire.

Three students were detained; charges and school discipline is pending. This is an ongoing investigation.
