The victim in a fatal crash on I-16 Wednesday afternoon in Effingham County has been identified.

Alton Bennett, 68, of Marietta, was killed in a two-vehicle accident. Initial reports indicate Bennett was traveling west on I-16 in a Honda Accord when he crossed the median and struck a Toyota Corolla, which was traveling east, head on. Bennett was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

“We don’t know why he crossed over,” said Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jamey Holloway. “We don’t know if he had health issues. It doesn’t look like he just lost control.”

The accident occurred around 3:40 Wednesday afternoon and closed the eastbound lanes for a while. Bennett was alone in his vehicle at the time of the accident, Holloway said.

All five occupants of the Toyota, including two children, were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. No charges have been filed.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
