GUYTON -- South Effingham's boys soccer team isn't likely to get caught looking ahead. It doesn't even pay much attention to the scoreboards on each end of its field.

With their 6-2 victory over Statesboro on Tuesday, the Mustangs remained unbeaten in Region 2-AAAAA play.

"We're two games in and won both so that's a good start," South Effingham coach Matt Hunnewell said. "We've got two more big games against Wayne County and Ware County coming up, and they are always a challege. They are big, strong teams and are always in shape so we're going to be working.

"We just try to take it one day at a time, one game at a time. We didn't start thinking about Wayne County and Ware County until winning this game."

Hunnewell's team played the Blue Devils like they were oblivious to the score. They raced to a 3-0 lead and controlled the entire contest.

"We fell behind Islands 3-0 or 4-0 in the first half early in the year," Hunnewell said. "During our halftime time talk, we told them if we were going to come back it would be one (goal) at a time. We threw out there that Rome wasn't built in a day. Our motto has been 'brick by brick,' just trying to earn a little bit of it one piece at a time. 

"At the end of the season, hopefully, we will be able to look back and see what we've built."

South Effingham thoroughly dominated the time of possession en route to a 3-1 halftime lead. Two of its goals came with one minute of each other.

Jaydon Parrish tallied two of Mustangs' goals in the opening 45 minutes and finished with three.

Juarin Pisarski, Ashton Meador and Andrew Garner also scored for South Effingham.
