South Effingham quarterback Anthony Becks hands off to Gabe Goodwin against West Laurens on Sept. 15 in Dexter.

GUYTON — The South Effingham High School football team is trying to find its way after a tough 44-13 loss to Brunswick last week. Although there was trouble on both sides of the ball, the defense had an especially tough time controlling Pirates quarterback Jamarius Stevens.
Stevens shouldered the load for the Pirates. He used his feet to reach the end zone three times and added a pair of touchdown passes.
“They are very talented on what they do on offense,” South Effingham coach Donnie Revell said. “They use their athletes to their advantage. That was a challenge for our players, to make the play in space. Their coach does a nice job and they have good size on them on both sides of the ball.”
South Effingham got a score from its offense and defense.
Makenly Newbill returned an interception for a touchdown and Taylor Jackson threw a Jackson fired a 63-yard scoring pass to Caleb Radcliffe.
Anthony Beck threw for 53 yards and rushed for 15 and continues to lead the 0-5 Mustangs in all-purpose yards.
Revell said the talented quarterback is vital to his team’s attack.
“He’s a senior and he’s worked really hard this year,” Revell said. “Obviously, we haven’t had the success we’d like to have this year at this point but the kids continue to play and he’s played a key role in that. He’s been a true leader throughout this point and, hopefully, that will continue.”
The Mustangs will host unbeaten Richmond Hill on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for homecoming.
“We’ve got to continue to make the correct plays and not make mistakes,” Revell said. “We are still making mistakes and teams are making us pay for our mistakes, so we have to find a way to eliminate those.”
The Wildcats boast a 4-0 record and a quarterback in Kasey Green who is one good game away from having a 1,000-yard season on the ground.
“Obviously they are very talented,” Revell said. “They are undefeated right now so it’s a huge challenge for our
kids, but our players want to play. They want to have a chance and they want to go out there and all we can ask them to do is to continue to work hard.”
