GUYTON, Ga. โ€” After a storm-delayed start that pushed kickoff back an hour and a half, New Hampsteadโ€™s Christian Kinlaw provided nearly all the offense the Phoenix would need Friday night.

Kinlaw scored two touchdowns and hauled in a two-point conversion, lifting New Hampstead to a 14-6 win over South Effingham in the season opener for both teams. The game, which was delayed one hour and 30 minutes, wrapped up just before midnight.

South Effingham stayed within reach thanks to a gritty defensive effort. The Mustangs turned back New Hampstead four times inside the red zone.

The Mustangs broke through in the fourth quarter when Maddox Vasquez found the end zone for their only score of the night. But Southโ€™s offense couldnโ€™t muster another drive before time expired.

South Effingham (0-1) has a bye week before traveling to Toombs County on Aug. 29.

Check back tomorrow for more photos and interviews of the Mustangsโ€™ opener.
