GUYTON -- There's that word again.

Coach Johnny DeRing's South Effingham Mustangs proved to be "resilient" during the opening round of the Class AAAAA baseball playoffs Thursday.

After getting handled 8-4 in the opener of the best-of-three series against Thomas County Central, they rebounded to win the nightcap 5-3.

The winner of the series will be decided in Friday's 3 p.m. game.

Jakob Valleroy got the win on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Caleb Radcliffe led South Effingham at the plate with two hits.
