Community needs best hospital possible

Dear Editor,

I write this letter in support of renovation and expansion of Effingham Hospital. A good hospital is necessary for a complete community. Without a modern hospital, it is difficult to attract new physicians, especially specialists. We must provide office space for physicians to lease, adequate space and equipment in the hospital so that they, along with staff, can provide quality health care.

We must offer expanded and well-equipped operating rooms for more surgery which will help the finances of the hospital, while offering better service to the people of Effingham County.

A business must expand and modernize to meet the needs of their customers or they will lose its customers to competitors. As our county continues to grow, we must grow to meet the needs of our residents.

Good medical care is necessary to attract industry. The hospital is an industry itself which provides approximately 250 jobs, plus the physicians and their staffs, plus other supporting businesses.

I know of people who would not have survived without the emergency care at Effingham Hospital. We need to offer chemotherapy and other treatments for our cancer patients, so that they would not have to go to Savannah for treatment. We can do this with the proposed expansion.
This expansion would allow us to offer an Alzheimer’s unit, which is greatly needed in our county.

May the Hospital Authority, the county commissioners and all of us get together and make this happen for the good of Effingham County and its citizens.
