The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution isn’t just the numerical starter of these constitutional provisions. In many ways, it is the most important of the amendments. It protects freedom of the press and religion, of course, but it also protects “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
