NEW ORLEANS—Georgia Southern University eniors Garrett Frye and Edwin Jackson were named Monday to the Sun Belt preseason football all-conference second team on offense and defense, respectively.
The preseason teams, voted on by both the leagues’ coaches and designated media members, feature second-team recognitions for the first time in 2014. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Frye, an offensive tackle from South Forsyth High School, has earned all-America honors in each of the last two years and has been a mainstay on the line, starting in the last 25 games. Georgia Southern’s offensive line has been a major factor in the Eagles’ earning a No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division I in team rushing average in 2012 and 2013.
Senior linebacker Edwin Jackson joined the Eagles in 2011 as a walk-on and last year was the team’s top tackler with 92. Starting in all 11 games, the Atlanta native posted a game-high 10 tackles in Georgia Southern’s win over Florida.
Senior quarterback Terrance Broadway of UL Lafayette was selected as the league’s preseason offensive player of the year and Qushaun Lee of Arkansas State the preseason defensive player of the year. UL Lafayette, the coaches’ unanimous pick to win the Sun Belt Conference this season, had 10 players total named to preseason all-conference teams.
Each offensive and defensive team is comprised of 12 players each. For purposes of offense, an extra wide receiver is listed.  For purposes of defense, the next highest vote-getter from any defensive position is included.
Both Frye and Jackson will represent Georgia Southern for Sun Belt Media Day today at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Fans can submit questions via social media channels Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using #SunBeltMediaDay.
Georgia Southern opens the 2014 season at N.C. State on Aug. 30. The Eagles will host Savannah State in the Sept. 6 home opener and will begin Sun Belt play Sept. 25 at home against Appalachian State.
