SPRINGFIELD -- Effingham County lost the battle of total yardage but more than made up for its with a ball-hawking defense en route to a 14-12 victory over Bradwell Institute on Friday night at Rebel Field.
The Rebels (3-5, 2-2 Region 2-AAAAAA) managed only 131 offensive yards forced five turnovers and blocked two extra points.
Bradwell (0-5-1, 0-4) had 201 yards of offense, but had 11 penalties including a key holding call that negated a third-quarter touchdown.
ECHS scored first of Devon Swinney's 2-yard TD run in the first quarter. Bradwell answered but Bryce Vanderhoek blocked the extra point. In the third quarter, the Rebels went up 14-6 on Miquel Allen's 17-yard TD run.
Again, Bradwell answered with a touchdown and elected to try for the one-point kick but Tyler Wells blocked that try.
The ECHS win sets up a showdown between the Rebels and Statesboro next Friday in Statesboro with a possible state playoff berth at stake. Both teams have two region wins.
