Rebels welcome summer competition

SPRINGFIELD — Effingham County has been a hot spot for area football teams to compete this summer.

The Rebels’ coaching staff has hosted several teams for camps and 7-on-7 matches and head coach Buddy Holder has enjoyed seeing the field peppered with so many athletes.

“Anytime we can get different teams to come in, it gives you someone (to play against) other than yourself,” Holder said. “That’s what everyone wants.”

The Rebels’ biggest question heading into fall is who will be their starting quarterback? With multiple players still competing for the position, Holder is looking for one to step up and take control.

Holder is closely evaluating Zach Garcia, D’Andre Johnson and other candidates. Summer camp is the best place for Holder to dissect their progress.

“They are getting better,” Holder said. “We have a long way to go. Until we sit back and watch the film, I can’t say what they did do and what they didn’t do.”

Holder is pleased to have a large group of players spending the summer getting in much-needed reps. And while good skill-position players are vital, Holder noted that the addition of more linemen helps everyone get better.

“I’m just glad we are here working,” Holder said. “They did a lot of things down there. The linemen look like they got a lot of work done.

“More teams brought more linemen today and they get more reps that way.”
