GUYTON -- Liam Rickman booted a 38-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift South Effingham to a dramatic 33-30 victory over Wayne County at the Corral.

SEHS (1-2) stormed back from a 23-7 third-quarter deficit by taking advantage of two key Yellow Jacket turnovers.

Jeremiah Washington’s fumble recovery at the WC 14 set up Cameron Edwards 3-yard TD run. Less than two minutes later, Dominic Martell returned an interception 20 yards for another score.

Both times SEHS converted two-point conversions and the game was tied at 23.

Wayne (0-3) went back in front 30-23, but Kaden Degenero’s 14-yard TD pass to Joell Laldee knotted the game at 30 with 4:24 to go.

Wayne won the yardage battle 383-194, but committed 17 penalties for 154 yards. The Yellow Jackets had two 15-yard penalties on the Mustangs’ game-winning drive.

Edwards finished with 111 rushing yards on 24 carries.

Jamari Fields got South on the board in the first half with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

SEHS will have a bye week next week before returning to action Sept. 24 against rival Effingham County.
