We are in overdrive right now, figuring out who can help us and who can't.
South Effingham boys basketball coach Jesse Osborne

GUYTON -- While area basketball teams are getting ready to take the floor, some are preparing for more than just another season.

South Effingham's boys squad is looking to rebound from a 5-22 record a year ago.

“It’s been exciting,” first-year Mustangs coach Jesse Osborne. “(It’s been) kind of a whirlwind — kind of thrown into the fire, getting to know everyone quickly. I didn’t have the summer to get to know these players like other coaches. You have June and July to work out, run your offense and implement schemes ,and I didn’t have that time.

"We are in overdrive right now, figuring out who can help us and who can’t.”

Osborne is looking to build a powerhouse program — something that fans can remember decades from now.

“Baseball here has always had a winning tradition,” he said. “Football, in the past, has always been fairly well. I know there has been some down years. Football has always been a decent program here.

"In basketball, we’ve had good players and some decent seasons but there has never really been a consistency there. There’s been a lot of turnovers with coaches in the past. I’m really looking forward to being here long term. You have to have good leaders in the locker room and I think I have three good ones.”
