Brett Griffin was ready to put anybody who could throw a couple of pitches on the mound Saturday against Lakeside-Evans.

Thanks to Josh Moreland, they weren’t needed.

Moreland threw a complete-game four-hitter, and the Rebels blanked the Panthers 7-0 to take the final game of their best-of-three series and advance to the Region 3-AAAA baseball championship round. It also secured a berth in the Class AAAA state playoffs for the Rebels.

“This is great,” Griffin said. “Our kids deserve it. They did a great job of dealing with adversity. You’ve got to give it to them.”

Moreland struck out five and did not walk a batter. He limited the Panthers to four singles.

“He did a great job of staying composed and letting the guys work behind him,” Griffin said. “He threw great tonight.”

The Rebels’ offense piled up 12 hits, with Zach Dotson going 2-for-4 with a homer and a double. Spencer Jackson was 3-for-4 and Cory Caldwell went 2-for-3 with a double.

Justin Rogers came off the bench for a pinch-hit run-scoring single in the fifth.

“Our guys have done a good job of staying with it and giving us good at-bats,” Griffin said. “We hit a lot of balls hard right at people. We told them they’ll fall in sooner or later.”

Evans swept Wayne County, who finished as the South subregion’s No. 1 seed. Wayne’s only two losses in the subregion were to Effingham, and had Wayne won, the Rebels would have had to travel to Jesup.
