Soccer Mustangs to go on the road for state playoffs

The South Effingham Mustangs soccer team is headed to the Class AAA state playoffs again.

This time, they’re going as the No. 4 seed after falling 1-0 to Benedictine in the Region 3-AAA playoffs on Friday. The Cadets’ Felipe Carbonell netted the game’s only goal, sending the Mustangs on the road for a first-round state playoff matchup with Cairo on April 24.

Richmond Hill won the region championship and the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs, beating Harlem 5-1 in the title game.

The Mustangs (7-8) earned a spot in the state playoffs with their 3-2 win over Thomson on Wednesday. They finished the region regular season schedule with a 1-0 win over Liberty County.

The Lady Mustangs fell 1-0 to Bluffton (S.C.) on Friday, with the Lady Bobcats’ April Cathcart scoring the game’s lone goal. The Lady Mustangs’ shot at a return to the state playoffs ended with a 2-1 loss to Cross Creek last Tuesday.
