As National 4-H Week came to a close, the celebration of 4-H continued to resonate throughout Effingham as 4-H’ers geared up for the 71st Effingham County Fair.

This year’s farm-fresh theme, “The Best Things Are Home-Grown,” had 4-H’ers busy carving pumpkins, assembling the float for the fair parade, decorating the 4-H booth, installing  mini-booths for the yearly mini-booth competition, entering various exhibits and participating in the livestock shows.

4-H has long been a part of Effingham’s fair week, and continues the tradition of “making the best better” for Effingham County’s youth and all its citizens.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
