On Jan. 13, a large audience of students and parents participated in a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) event at Rincon Elementary School. RIF was sponsored by Effingham County Even Start Literacy and Rincon Elementary School. County pre-k students, Headstart students, and students from Kathy’s Day Care and Even Start families were invited to attend the event. Also, all students from RES, the host school, were invited to participate.

Melinda Hawkins, occupational therapist, presented a writing workshop to the parents in attendance. The workshop was designed to help parents understand the importance and stages of writing development for children. A question and answer period was allowed after the presentation so that parents could receive solutions to specific problems.

All of the children present were involved in a reading activity workshop, and then they had the opportunity to choose their own take-home book from many appropriate titles.
