Annual federal program meeting to be held

The public is invited to attend the federal programs annual meeting on Thursday at the Effingham County Board of Education auditorium, 405 N. Ash Street in Springfield. In order to give everyone a greater opportunity to attend this informative meeting, a morning time and an evening time have been scheduled. It is only necessary to attend one of the meetings.

The morning meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with sign-in and light refreshments starting at 9:45. The evening meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with sign-in and light refreshments starting at 5:45.  

The purpose of this meeting is to allow the public to have input concerning the FY09 federal programs which include Title I, Title II-Part A and Title II-Part D. Those attending will be provided with an overview of these programs and the curriculum. The federal law, “No Child Left Behind” Act (including school choice services) will also be explained.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
