The Effingham County Board of Education unanimously approved appointing Vickie Decker to the school board to represent District 5 at a special called meeting Wednesday.

Decker will replace former chairperson Vera Jones, who resigned from the board after moving out of the district.

Superintendent Randy Shearouse said the board did not vote at the last meeting but discussed appointing Decker.

“Her name has to be sent to the secretary of state, and then we will have the judge put her into office next meeting,” Shearouse said. “We need to go ahead and vote on her so we can send her name in.”

Shearouse said Decker would be sworn in at the Aug. 6 meeting, but her name must be sent in prior to that time.

“It’s about a three-day turnaround,” he said.

The board also approved granting Georgia Power an easement on Ebenezer Road to change the utility poles.

“These poles will actually go outside the fence,” Shearouse said. “They will not interfere with the driveway. We just need to grant Georgia Power permission.”
