Effingham County High School has elected to join the federally supported Graduate First Program to place an emphasis on increasing the graduation rate and decreasing the dropout rate.

The Graduate First Team has identified affective engagement as its target area. The team administered a climate survey to parents, students and teachers. As a result, the team has created an action plan to address parent involvement, student attendance, student engagement, teacher morale and community involvement.

The first initiative implemented was the Teacher of the Month award as voted on by the student body. Mick Danielson was the first Teacher of the Month recipient for the month of November.

Students recognized his patience, positive attitude, effective leadership skills and his dedication to not only his students but to the cross country team.

The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
