SAVANNAH —“I want to be successful. I want to be proud of myself and once that is done, my heart will be lighter as that burden will have been lifted,” explains Felicia Milbourne, Savannah Technical College’s Adult Education EAGLE delegate. “I will know I’ve done the right thing, I will hold my head up high, stand tall and be strong.”

As a single mother of a 3-year-old son, and being an adopted child herself, Milbourne knows how not to let obstacles get in her way.

“Although I don’t know what I will go into after I complete my GED, I know I will continue my education. Education is so important and I continue to tell my son that every day. We make learning fun in our household,” Milbourne said.

Milbourne said she went back to obtain her GED because her life’s focus has changed.

“I am so much more motivated to learn and to be successful now than I was in high school,” she said. “I don’t allow myself to get caught up in negative thinking. I am making progress in my life through education and I know it will continue.”

Milbourne is also quick to tell you the most important thing she’s learned while taking adult education classes, “speak up — I’ve learned to never be afraid to ask a question or to ask for help because you never know what you may gain from someone else.”

Milbourne represented STC’s Adult Education program at the EAGLE Leadership Institute Feb. 11-13. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors those students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education classes and programs.
