The Calculus/Physics Club at Effingham County High School collected $980 in a campaign to raise money for Down syndrome awareness.

The donation was given to the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, which is a non-profit local group of families and friends of those with Down syndrome. The collections took place during the month of October, which is Down syndrome awareness month.

For the third year, the 35 members of the Calculus/Physics Club collected change in their piggy banks, donated by Citizens Bank of Effingham.

The club is sponsored by Wendy Fears, a teacher at Effingham County High School.

To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
