King earns Georgia Power scholarship

Georgia Power announced that Jaret King has received a $2,500 Georgia Power scholarship through the company’s scholarship program.

Open to high school seniors, recent graduates or current full-time students at accredited colleges, universities or technical schools, the Georgia Power Scholarship Program was established in 1988 by former Georgia Power and later Southern Company President and CEO Bill Dahlberg.

This year, 21 scholarships were awarded in the amount of $2,500 each. Since its inception, more than 500 scholarships have been provided to students. Scholarship recipients are selected on a combination of characteristics, including grades, activities, work experience, community involvement and leadership.

King attends University of Florida and is studying civil engineering.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
