Pre-K application process to begin soon

Parents who want to apply for their children to attend pre-kindergarten in Effingham County may pick up registration packets beginning on Feb. 19. Completed pre-K application packets must be turned in between Feb. 19-March 8, to the elementary school for which the family is zoned.


The lottery-style drawing to determine the students for the pre-K program will be on March 19 at the Effingham County Board of Education auditorium. A drawing will be held for each elementary school that afternoon, at the following times: Ebenezer, 12:30; Guyton, 12:45; Springfield, 1; Blandford, 1:15; Marlow, 1:30; Rincon, 1:45; Sand Hill, 2; and South Effingham, 2:15.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
