Betty Milton was awarded as the February parent of the month by Rincon Elementary School for her involvement and dedication to her nephew’s education and special needs.

Dallen Coleman, 5 years old, in enrolled in the Preschool Intervention Class at Rincon Elementary.

“One of the worst difficulties in being a parent to Dallen was not being able to understand all of the little daily struggles that he has,” she said.

Milton also said her ambition for her nephew is for him to receive the best education that he can in our school system, live life as normal as he can and to excel in whatever he undertakes.

Milton was awarded a certificate and small gift for her parenting accomplishments at the RES PTA meeting.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
