The Effingham County School System recently completed vision, dental and hearing screenings on each of its 480 pre-k students in preparation for their transition to kindergarten next fall.

As a result of this collaborative effort, involving Georgia's Prevent Blindness vision screeners, school nurses and pre-k teachers, several pre-k students were identified with vision, hearing and/or dental problems and were referred to physicians for professional help.

After receiving the services recommended, these students will enter kindergarten prepared and ready to learn.

The vision of Prevent Blindness is to preserve a lifetime of sight for all Georgians especially children, seniors and those without access to eye care through vision screenings, eye exams and education.

The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
