South Effingham Middle School’s eighth-grade advanced-content physical science classes recently traveled to South Effingham Elementary School for three collaborative lab activities.

The idea came from Missy Cubbedge, a fifth-grade teacher at SEES who wanted all the fifth-graders at the school to have better knowledge about density, chemical weathering and mechanical weathering.

The students from the middle school were accompanied by Shelly Hobbs, their science teacher, and Carla Dean, the school’s gifted program facilitator.

The middle school students showed their knowledge and responsibility by orchestrating the labs with minimal assistance to all the fifth-graders at SEES. All three labs incorporated both the middle and elementary school students’ Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.
