SEMS hosts second annual math, science family fun night

South Effingham Middle School hosted its second annual Math and Science Family Fun Night on Feb. 26. 

More than 300 students and family members were in attendance and participated in many events including a flight simulator, Oreo moon phases, sunset in a bag, origami and arithmetic tricks just to name a few.

Georgia Power and Georgia Pacific were also on hand to present demonstrations.

Parents and students enjoyed a tremendous amount of learning disguised as fun.

The event was sponsored by local businesses and the Georgia Partnership for Reform of Science and Mathematics (PRISM).

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
