Smith named to presidents honor roll at UNG

DAHLONEGA— Matthew Ryan Smith of Clyo has been named to the president’s honor roll at the University of North Georgia for achieving a 4.0 grade point average, carrying 12 or more credit hours in one semester and having no grade lower than B.

Dr. Bonita C. Jacobs, president of UNG, recognized more than 60 students who reached this academic achievement in summer semester.

With more than 17,000 students, the University of North Georgia is one of the state’s largest public universities, and offers more than 100 programs of study ranging from certificate and associate degrees to professional doctoral programs. UNG has campuses in Blue Ridge, Cumming, Dahlonega, Gainesville, and Oconee County.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
