Last Wednesday, 11 South Effingham High School band students took the next step with their band careers and signed to play in college at SEHS’ band college signing day. Sean McBride, South Effingham band director, started Band College Signing Day to honor all of the students who are pursuing band in college.

Gage Moore signed to play at Point University. Kat Kelly and Katie Cope signed to play at The University of Georgia in the Redcoats marching band. Bethany Dyals signed to play at Georgia College and State University. Loren Billeiter and Ben Elmore will be attending Georgia Southern University to continue band. Jocelyn Price signed to play at Utah State University. Parker Gordy and Dallas McCorkendale will join the band department at Georgia Tech next year. Alex Bennett signed to play at Armstrong State University. This is the second year that SEHS has held a signing day for the band department.

The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
