The “Cat in the Hat,” Maia Elwell, visited The Learning Treehouse during Dr. Seuss Week to read “The Cat in the Hat” to aspiring readers.

"The Cat in the Hat" is 236 words long and The Learning Treehouse had Dr. Seuss-themed lunches for its kids all week long, with Fox in Socks Day, One Fish, Two Fish Day, Green Eggs and Ham Day and The Lorax Day. Among the menu selections wee One Fish, Two Fish sticks, How the Grinch Stole Cindy Lou Who's Baked Apples, oodles of spaghetti noodles, green eggs and ham with oranges from Sam I Am, Blue Whale's fruit cocktail and Horton Hears a Who beef stew.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
