ATHENS—The University of Georgia has announced the students who were named Presidential scholars or achieved dean’s list for the fall semester.

Earning Presidential scholars list recognition were Jessica Eryn Ryle of Guyton, a sophomore in Arts and Sciences, and Paul Taylor Smith of Guyton, a senior in Business.

Earning dean’s list recognition were Danielle Alexandra Defoe of Rincon, a sophomore in Arts and Sciences, Richard Wade Morgan of Rincon, a sophomore in Arts and Sciences, Sajal Suren Patel of Rincon, a freshman in Arts and Sciences, Erin L. Cutright of Rincon, a senior in Business, and Lance Copeland Faglie of Rincon in Pharmacy.

The President scholar designation recognizes undergraduates who have scored a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the semester. Students named to the dean’s list have earned a 3.5 or higher gpa. Both designations require that students take at least 14 credit hours and receive no unsatisfactory or incomplete grades.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
