Wright earns degree from Francis Marion

Kyla Nicole Wright of Rincon received a bachelor of science in biology from Francis Marion University.

Francis Marion University, in Florence, S.C., awarded 363 graduate and undergraduate degrees at its spring commencement exercises May 9 at the Smith University Center on campus.

The graduates included students from six different countries, 16 states and 34 South Carolina counties.

South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman delivered the commencement address.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
