Effingham County, captured in time
Cal cover
At the top is the cover of the new Historic Effingham Society calendar, showing the 1921 Effingham Academy girls basketball team. - photo by Photo provided

The new 2012 Historic Effingham Society Calendar is now available for sale. We are very proud this year to offer a great variety of newly discovered old photographs.

Our cover is quite nostalgic with the 1921 girls basketball team from Effingham Academy featuring the uniforms of the time – middy blouses and bloomers.

The present home of Deetie and Reiser Rahn is the backdrop for the 1916 Groover family picture. Other families featured in our 2012 calendar are: George F. and Annie (Hinely) Kessler, Evalina and Robert Sheffield and the McCarr’s.

The cutest photo is a 1958 first grade class from Springfield Elementary School. Mrs. Jaudon had dressed her students in rabbit suits for an Easter program. Some of our local business people are really hopping in this photo.

Graduating classes from Effingham Academy in 1920 and 1956 transport us back in time.

Group photographs include: girl 4-H Club members in 1960 on a glass bottom boat during a trip to Florida, a 1910’s group of couples in a souvenir photo at Tybee Beach, confirmation in 1953 at Bethesda United Methodist and a 1960’s photo of American Legion Post 209 delivering gifts for Veterans at the VA Medical Center in Augusta. Buried in a file we located a 1904 Rincon ball team in uniform. Several of these gentlemen were charter members of the Georgia Salzburger Society.

A great find this year thanks to Mrs. Bessie Studier is a postcard photograph of Dudley’s Academy, founded in Pineora in 1917 as an industrial training boarding school for young black people. It was located near the present Mt. Moriah Baptist Church on Midland Road.

Please drop by and purchase a calendar at Effingham Museum, 1002 North Pine Street in Springfield, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or pick them up in local businesses in the weeks to come. The cost is $5 each and helps support our organization. To secure calendars call our office at 754-2170 or 754-6681. We will gladly deliver them for your business to sell.

We offer thanks to everyone who provided the great photographs for the 2012 calendar.
