The Historic Effingham Societys 2011 School Days Calendar
ECH10-1
The cover of the Historic Effingham Society’s 2011 Calendar, “School Days,” features the boys and girls basketball teams from Clyo High School in 1949. Calendars will be on sale for $5 each in the Historic Effingham Society gift shop and in many area businesses. - photo by Photo provided
This year is marching on and our new item in our Historic Effingham Society Gift Shop is the 2011 School Days Calendar. The gift shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at 1002 North Pine St. in Springfield in the Old Jail. Come by and take a look at our many items that make great gifts for the holidays. We also offer lovely Christmas Ornaments featuring Effingham Buildings, past issues of our calendars at reduced rates and many books and publications at special discount pricing. Our Tasty Traditions Cookbook makes a lovely gift.

Our new calendar cover features the 1949 Clyo girls’ and boys’ basketball teams. You can reminisce as you discover teachers and coaches among the student photos. Marlow’s 12th grade classes of 1950 and 1955 are included, along with a couple of their basketball teams and faculty photos.
Guyton’s photos include a 1926 school photo at Guyton Public School as well as photos from Effingham County Training School in 1953. Rincon offers a first grade class photograph from 1954. A school closing photo from June 1960 shows the students as well as teachers and mothers. We have Effingham Academy’s graduating classes of 1942, 1946 and 1949.

The U. S. Capitol is background for the Marlow High 1954 class trip. One of the oldest photos in the calendar is that of the second grade class from Clyo School. There are many faces in this year’s edition that were photographed 50 plus years ago. You are apt to find someone you are related to or know in the new issue.

We hope that you will want to support Historic Effingham Society with the purchase of a calendar for $5 each. If you would like to sell them for us in your business or would like to know how to make a purchase, contact Historic Effingham at 754-2170 or Calendar Chairman Susan Exley at 754-6681. We will soon offer the calendars in area businesses as well as our Gift Shop.

The Historic Effingham Society’s Fall Festival scheduled for Oct. 9 has been cancelled. Look for a bigger and better annual HES Christmas open house in December with the date and time to be announced.
