At the annual Historic Society of Effingham banquet Feb. 5, members and guests celebrated the society’s 25th anniversary at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center.
Twenty-five years ago, a group of 20 citizens met to establish an organization that could preserve and display early documents that were pivotal to the history of Effingham County and to encourage an interest in local history through the study of genealogy.
“So we’ve done all those things through our museum and through our living history site,” said Richard Loper, president of the HES.
