Mitt Romney may wish he ran for president in 2016.

As ABC News reported, Romney said at an event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that he often asks himself why he didnt run for president this year, a time when both nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have such low favorability ratings.

"I get asked on a regular basis, 'Boy, why aren't you running this year?' I ask myself that a lot too. But I did that once," Romney said.

Romney made some jokes about his 2012 run, saying that he choked against President Barack Obama in that election. As The Washington Times reported, Romney said that he failed to connect with the American public.

The audience at large, they think the reason Im talking about business is because all I care about is rich people and business leaders, Romney said, according to The Washington Times. Look, rich people and business people do well whether Republicans or Democrats are in charge. The real people who suffer when business is leaving or not successful are the people in the middle class. If you want to get wages up in America for middle income Americans, theres only one way I know how to do that in real terms by having more businesses want to hire more people.

But he also said it was a fun experience and encouraged anyone to run if they get the opportunity.

The former Massachusetts governor also said that he doesnt think the current candidates have spoken enough about the policy issues that affect Americans.

"I've watched the presidential debates and looked at the give and take," he said

Romney has previously spoken out against Republican nominee Donald Trump, becoming one of the GOP establishments main advocates for avoiding the Trump vote.
