Guess what might be the next great social media thing to end 2014? The #Elfie. But there's more to it than just a picture online. It actually could help children. - photo by istockphoto.com/kokanphoto

Yes, the new year is in sight. But #2014 wouldn’t end #2014 if it didn’t end on a totally #2014 note.

Cue the latest trend that’s popping up this holiday season: It’s you, dressed in a Christmas sweater, snapping a photo of yourself with a gleeful smile across your rosy-red cheeks.

This is the #Elfie, and it’s going to be everywhere this holiday season. Just imagine, #elfies everywhere.

The #Elfie is getting attention this year from Save the Children, an advocacy program that’s looking to help children across the world get out of poverty and find happiness in their lives.

“As the leading expert on children, we inspire and achieve lasting impact for millions of the world’s most vulnerable girls and boys. By transforming children’s lives now, we change the course of their future and ours,” the program’s website says.

Save the Children, a company that sends 89.4 percent of its donations towards program services, wants people to help support their cause this year by wearing sweaters and taking #elfies. It’s about spreading joy and giving kids some happy holiday fun.

“Take some selfies while wearing your sweater and post using #Elfie! Tag two friends to do the same! Give friends and family the chance to sing their hearts out to some holiday hits. Get everyone to perform in their sweaters.”

So, yeah, imagine all the #elfies you’ll see if this thing gets off the ground.

But it wouldn’t be the first #elfie in history. According The Daily Express, the first #Elfie was taken earlier this year when an elephant snapped a photo of itself using a dropped smartphone.

Sorry, Dumbo, but not the same thing.

Fundraising efforts in the U.K. asked people to take #elfies to help families in the Philippines hurt by Typhoon Haiyan. The campaign raised more than $1,200.

That’s not the only place you would have found #Elfies in the past. The Twitter account@ChristmasElfie is more like the #Elfie that is bound to take over social media this holiday season. In fact, last year, when selfies were new and hip and not breaking records, Twitter users tweeted some of their elfies with the #elfie hashtag.

Now that we’re in an age where selfies are as commonplace as a high-five, get ready to see some more.
