Woods to lead MLK Jr. Day Parade

Sister Juanita Woods of Springfield has been chosen as the 2010 MLK Jr. Day Parade grand marshal.

This year’s theme, submitted by Georgiana Johnson of Ebenezer Middle School, is “Dreamers of Today-Leaders of Tomorrow.”
Sterling E. Morrison won second place for “Past Dreams-Future Changes,” Zakeria Orr took third for “Dr. King: The Dreamer of Change,” and Rakkia Smith took honorable mention for “Making a Better Future Means Listening to Our Past.”

The annual MLK Jr. Day breakfast will be held Jan. 18 at 7:30 a.m. at the Effingham County administrative complex. The parade will follow, beginning at 10 a.m. at Laurel Street and going through downtown Springfield.

The children’s noon service and awards ceremony will be held at noon at the Effingham County Recreation and Parks gymnasium. The speaker for the occasion will be Torian White.

The evening service will be held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Guyton. The theme for the evening services is “Pastors Appreciation, Leaders of Today.”

The MLK Committee is encouraging all churches, civic groups, organizations and individuals to participate in the celebration throughout the MLK Jr. Holiday.
