RINCON -- Aiming high helped Effingham County 4-H's junior modified trap team hit a big target Saturday.

The local shooters, despite not having a permanent place to practice, finished first in the annual 4-H state competition at Rock Eagle. The event featured more than 800 competitors.

Logan Ratliff led Effingham County with a perfect score. The championship team also includes Luke Elliott, Nathan McCourt, Brian Kieffer and Ethan Helton.

All are participants in the Effingham County 4-H SAFE program.

"We're using this as an avenue to teach life skills," Effingham County head coach Sid Warner said. "It gets these kids out of their shell and away from the computer. It fills them with some pride.

"Ihad one student who had never even shot before and I thought he would be hard to teach. He hit his first perfect score about three weeks ago."
